OCC Cornhole Summer League Rules

This is a fun summer social league... but with any league some rules are required.  These rules have been simplified from the official Cornhole Canada Rulebook.  (https://cornholecanada.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/CORNHOLE-CANADA-CNPS-RULES-2025-2026.pdf)

League rules may be ammended at the discretion of the convenors at any point during the season.

Definitions

Frame:  A frame (or inning) in cornhole is a single round of play where both teams throw all four of their bags. Points are calculated at the conclusion of every frame, and only one player or team can score per frame using cancellation scoring. (comparable to an end of curling)

Woody:  Refers to any bag that has been pitched and remains on the board at the conclusion of the frame. Each woody is worth one (1) point.

Cornhole: Refers to any bag that has been pitched or knocked through the board hole.  Each cornhole is worth three (3) points.

Foul Bag: Refers to any cornhole bag(s) that has not been determined as a “woody” or “cornhole”, or was designated a foul bag as the result of a
rules violation.

Court:  Playing area for each match.

Scoring

  • Cancellation scoring is used .  This means the points of one player cancel out the points of their opponent during each frame. (eg if one team scores 7 and the other 4, then the higher team scores 3.  Using this method, only one player/team can score in each frame.

  • Games are played till a team meets or exceeds 21 points.  If the game is tied after 16 frames are completed, the team with the higher score is the victor.  If the game is tied at that point, then 2 more frames are played.  If the game remains tied after 2 extra frames, the game is extended one frame at a time till a team scores and wins the match.

  • Bags touching the ground or fouling in any way score 0 points and must be removed.

  • Score is tallied after all 8 bags (4 per team) are thrown and agreed upon before moving to the next frame.

  • Team must post/record their own score.

  • Wining team must complete score card and return to the bar at the end of each game.

Gameplay

  • Team listed first on the schedule has choice of first throw or lane.  The second team choses the other option

  • Each team has 2 players: one on each end of the boards.

  • Teammates will line up directly across from each other on the same side of the court, not diagonally from each other.

  • must line up opposite each other in the same lane (one left, one right).

  • Players alternate throwing 1 bag at a time until each has thrown 4 bags.  After all bags thrown, the frame is complete and cancellation scoring is registerd.

  • Bags must be thrown underhand, with at least one foot inside the pitcher’s box.

  • Players must not cross the front edge of the board when throwing.

  • The team that scores in the previous round throws first in the next frame.

  • If a frame ends in a tie, the same team that threw first previously throws first again.

  • If a player throws out of turn, their opponent may remove or leave bags as is.

Foul Bags

A bag is considered foul if:

  • The player steps outside the pitcher’s box or over the foul line while throwing.

  • The bag touches the ground or any object before landing on the board.

  • The bag is thrown from the wrong pitcher's box.

  • A player throws more than 4 bags in a frame.

  • The bag contacts any ceiling, wire, or obstacle before hitting the board.

  • Foul bags must be removed immediately.

Enjoy the game and play fair!
